Mark Buxton
Born in England, Mark Buxton's fascination with fragrances began while growing up near Hamburg. Over 20 years ago, he fell in love with Paris, a city that would later become the epicentre of his career as a perfumer. Buxton has many passions, including a love of wine, culinary arts and antiques, particularly those with an art deco flair.
A chance meeting on a German game show, where a 21-year-old Buxton and a friend attempted to identify 600 perfumes in a blind test, led to representatives from Haarmann & Reimer (now Symrise) offering him a place in their prestigious training program in Paris. This serendipitous event began his extraordinary journey into the world of fine fragrance creation.
With over 25 years of experience, Mark Buxton has collaborated with leading international fragrance houses and designed fragrances for some of the most luxurious brands, including Givenchy, Versace, Van Cleef & Arpels, Paco Rabanne, Lagerfeld, Burberry, Cartier, Chopard and Ferré. His bold signature was first discovered when he created the inaugural Comme des Garçons fragrance. He quickly gained recognition in the world of Haute Parfumerie and has since participated in various artistic projects.
Buxton's extensive portfolio includes collaborations with brands such as Oddity, biehl parfumkunstwerke, Brooklyn Soap Company, Cale Fragranze d'Autore, Le Labo and WienerBlut. Some of his most popular creations include Paco Rabanne Black XS for Her, Salvador Dali Laguna, Comme des Garçons Comme des Garçons 2 and Kajal Lamar.
Mark Buxton's approach to perfume creation is characterised by his eclectic style, which combines traditional British sensibility with contemporary dandyism, rock and idiosyncratic energy. His unconventional yet wearable creations defy luxury codes with impertinence and audacity. Buxton's quest for absolute simplicity is reflected in his seamless precision and concise olfactory formulas.
His work with Comme des Garçons, most notably creating the original scent and CDG 2, exemplifies Buxton's signature touch and has cemented the fashion house's position in the niche fragrance world. His fingerprints can also be found all over high-end perfumery, from the ultra-luxe House of Sillage collection to Le Labo's heady Vetiver 46.
In 2010, Mark Buxton decided to invest in new creative projects and became one of the investors of Nose, a Parisian boutique dedicated to niche perfumes. Through his eponymous brand, Mark Buxton Perfumes, he strives to freely express and share his creative universe. The brand embodies a refined world of astonishing modernity and launched its first candle collection in 2019.
Mark Buxton’s life and career in perfumery have been defined by his innovative spirit, passion for creativity and unique approach to fragrance creation.
